Frozen bananas are all over the web, being used as a quick and healthy one ingredient soft serve. They have a similar effect in blended beverages, making the drink thick and sweet, more like a shake than something nutritious. Frozen bananas, instead of ice cream, make the cream in this healthy smoothie.
All berries will work here. For convenience, I purchase the frozen bag of mixed berries from Whole Foods. Mixed tropical fruit would be great too, and usually contains banana so you could skip freezing a banana if going that route.
Any dairy or dairy free milk will work in this recipe. I prefer almond milk because it is lower in carbs and higher in protein than soy, rice, oat, etc. but use the product that works best for you.
Berries & Cream Smoothie
1 banana, peeled, chopped, and frozen
1 package frozen mixed berries
1 1/4- 1 1/2 cups almond milk
6 ice cubes (optional)
Place frozen banana, frozen berries, and 1 1/4 cups of almond milk in a blender, adding more milk if necessary to blend. Taste and if you want your smoothie thicker and/or colder add ice cubes and blend until combined.
