I love this shake as an afternoon pick-me-up. Chocolate contains small amounts of caffeine which is why some recommend not to eat chocolate before bedtime. It is perfect here, though, when it is too late for coffee or tea but too early to wind down.

Protein from the almond butter makes the shake filling. A touch of natural sweetener is necessary to make it taste like something you want to eat. Many love stevia, which is great, it’s probably one of the healthiest natural sweeteners around. It’s not my favorite so I use maple syrup.

A frozen banana is the key to make it rich and creamy. It is the healthy substitute for ice cream. Peel and slice your bananas then store in freezer bags for convenience. This is a great way to use over-ripe fruit.

Rich and Creamy Chocolate Shake
Serves 2

1 frozen banana, peeled and chopped before placing in freezer

2 tablespoons raw cacao or cocoa powder

2 tablespoons almond/peanut butter (or peanut butter powder for lower fat)

1 tablespoon maple syrup, agave, xylitol, or 2 stevia packets

1 cup almond milk (I use homemade)

1 cup ice cubes

pinch of sea salt

Place all ingredients in a blender adding more almond milk if necessary to blend. Enjoy right away!
